Janet Potts has found that osteopathic-based treatment procedures are the most effective in producing results for her clients as compared to traditional symptom oriented approaches. Effective self-adjustment home treatment techniques are taught to correct the misalignment and are used to affect pain that returns.
Manual Therapy is the generalized term for various clinical treatment approaches that utilize trained, specific hands-on techniques to assess and treat soft tissues and joints in order to relieve pain, increase mobility, and restore function. Manual Therapy includes but is not limited to:
Joint mobilization, as opposed to Manipulation, refers to low amplitude and velocity passive movement to joints. Although higher velocity techniques (similar to chiropractic adjustments) may be used, they are used much less frequently.
MET uses an active, voluntary contraction of specific muscles, in a specific direction, against a controlled counter-resistance in a precise position in order to reposition a joint, or lengthen shortened muscles. MET alternately relaxes and stretches opposing muscles, and thus their affected joints, to reestablish normal vertebral relationships/alignment.
STM is a manual therapy treatment that aims to decrease muscle tightness and hypertonus, increase muscle play, and release fascial restrictions between muscles. STM also includes Myofacial Release (MFR) and Strain- Counterstrain Techniques.s
